Summer's almost here and with it come the familiar scenes we Aussies so love: backyard cricket, beachside barbies, endless afternoons of sunshine and sausages.

With a long wet winter between this coming summer and last, you may have forgotten how best to make use of the sunshine. Here we provide you with three hot suggestions, to help you make the most of the warmer months when organising get-togethers or entertaining at home.

Backyard cricket

One of the most sacred of Aussie traditions is backyard cricket — the perfect way to work out while working up a thirst. And the best bit is since the game is confined by a suburban back fence it's a game for all age groups and abilities.

What you need: A backyard, bat, ball and at least two players (the more the merrier).

Optional extras: Turn a casual game into an excuse to catch up with friends and family by planning the event in advance (establish teams with captions and provide a "grandstand" for any observers). Cater for the players with a casual spread (barbecue or sandwiches) and don't forget that every athlete deserves a good selection of beverages. If you don't want to mix alcohol with sport then try some mocktails for all players as an after-match treat.
